The two concepts of yoga and therapy are instinctively similar, and yet each represents a vast subject matter and more than one lifetime of mastery. Most yoga practitioners consider yoga class their “therapy,” whether for physical, emotional, or mental needs, but what, exactly, should a Yoga Therapy Program address?

It is clear that in order to remain a useful way of “fixing” the body, modern healthcare must evolve to treat the cause of disease and not its symptoms. As a healing modality, Yoga Therapy is currently cheaper, less painful, and more integrally intelligent to any body’s natural programming. Versus the allopathic propensity, for example, to dose children for ADD/ADHD or turn to drastic surgery on a diagnosis of cancer, Yoga Therapy empowers the patient to see his or her own innate capacity to heal. Used as a partner with Western Medicine, Yoga Therapy can do everything from providing pain-management techniques to providing an alternative to surgery. Used shamanically, Yoga Therapy can remove disease or dysfunction completely.

The Boundless Yoga Therapy Program (BYTP) applies the precepts of yoga to the practice of therapy. This program is designed for Yoga Teachers at the RYT 200-hour level and above, and for others trained in bodywork that relies on some knowledge of western anatomy.

Graduates of this program will be trained to work privately with clients in an asana, breath-based, and energy-based capacity. To support this training, students of the BYTP will learn:

  • In-depth western and eastern anatomy
  • The therapeutic benefits of asanas, pranayamas, and kriyas
  • When to apply asanas, pranayamas, and kriyas to which clients
  • How to understand musculoskeletal breakdown and disease from an intuitive perspective
  • Basic concepts of a healthy, Ayurvedically-based diet to recommend to clients, and to work in partnership with Ayurvedic or other nutritional specialists.

program prerequisites

RYT-200 hour training, and preferably at least one year of training if trained outside Boundless Yoga. If not an RYT, an interested yoga student also trained as a bodyworker with basic knowledge of western anatomy.

program dates and details

The program’s duration is May-November 2010. The focus will be on basic therapies for musculoskeletal issues and, in the second half of the program as each student discovers her/his skills and interests, on in-depth musculoskeletal training, emotional and breath disturbances, disease, or Children with Special Needs.

We will use the main causes of death, and physical dysfunctions, that the developed world faces (including skeletal breakdowns like herniated discs, hips, knees, shoulders, and more) in our study. We will examine the many potential causes of these diseases and dysfunctions, and we use the Ayurvedic (Indian) concept of the koshas, or layers, of the body. This information empowers Yoga Therapists to help clients determine exactly where the source of their dis-ease lies.

The group will meet all day Saturday and Sunday except August 2010. These dates are:

  • May 8-9
  • June 12-13
  • July 10-11
  • September 25-26
  • October 9-10
  • November 6-7

Starting August 2010, students will commence their practicum and deepen their own interests in Yoga Therapy. Students will meet with Kim one-on-one to develop more focus and expertise in their chosen areas. All graduates of the program must have completed a report on this practicum by November 1, 2010,

Book list includes:

  • Louise Hay, Heal Yourself
  • Anodea Judith, Eastern Body, Western Mind
