Introduction to Sanskrit: The Language of the Heart, the Language
of Integration with Jill Manning

This workshop has been designed to introduce students of Yoga to Sanskrit
as the language of Yoga and the language of light (Luminous Shabda).  In
this weekend long exploration we will focus on the vowel
sounds–specifically how and where they resonate on the palate.  We will
also begin to uncover how understanding the diacritical marks can
significantly improve pronunciation for chanting.  We will practice
learning selected mantra’s, asana names, and call and response chanting
from the Yoga Sutras of Pantanjali.

This workshop is appropriate for anyone wanting to dive deeper into the
practice of yoga and begin to make connection between body, breath, sound,
and source.

Jill’s Bio

Jill has devoted herself to the study and practice of yoga since
‘discovering’ the practice at her local New York Sports Club in 1998.  The
amazing Kate Miller encouraged Jill to go to “yoga school” after routinely
bombarding her with questions after class and in June 2000 she received
her teaching certification from Integral Yoga Institute in New York City,
and has continued to study with many of the world’s most revered yoga
masters, including Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, with whom she has spent fourteen
weeks at his yoga shala during her 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010 trips to
Mysore, India. Jill continues to travel to Mysore, India annually to
practice at Guruji’s shala with his grandson R. Sharath.

A graduate of New York University, Jill has studied the intellectual
aspects of yoga as well as the physical and spiritual ones. Her scholarly
understanding of the Bhagavad-Gita and the Yoga Sutra’s, along with other
Shastras, brings an important dimension to her own practice as well as her
teaching style which has been described as, “an amazing teacher who is the
perfect mix of Zen and humorous.” During her weeks traveling throughout
India, Jill immersed herself in the country’s culture (and the Great
Ganga). She continues to play her own edges studying Sanskrit with
Manorama and with Sri Lakshmish Bhat of Mysore, India, as well as spending
many hours at the feet of Dr. MA Jayashree to further round her
understanding of the yoga tradition and to place an asana practice in
a larger context for herself and her students.

Jill co-taught Wake Up Yoga’s 250-hour Yoga Alliance registered teacher
training program from 2004-2009.  Currently Jill makes her home in and
teaches in Providence, RI where she leads monthly gatherings sharing
Sanskrit with yogis as an entry point for awareness and is always excited
to travel to new yoga homes to share in the very large community of yogis.
Jill dedicates her teaching to all of her mentors and teachers and would
like to acknowledge Corina Benner and David Keil for having a tremendous
impact on her life on and off the mat.

THIS WORKSHOP IS SOLD OUT!!!

Saturday August 14
Time: 3-7 p
Cost: $65

In this yoga as therapy training session we’ll take a very close look at the sacrum and the psoas. First, the anatomy of the sacrum and pelvic girdle, including the muscles that form its support system for safe movement — which, as it turns out, can be quite individual in the nuances of structure and function. We’ll also be looking at the mischief and injuries that can result when the sacrum is not working right, or when the hips and sacrum are forced to move in ways that are harmful or destabilizing.

At the center of this architecture lies the psoas, which flows like a pair of rivers through the valleys of the hips, bringing graceful movement while maintaining our center, the ‘midline’ of our physical as well as emotional and spiritual being. Problems in the low back and sacrum often arise from — or are worsened by — dysfunctions and imbalances.

We’ll be exploring the anatomy and functioning of the psoas in relation to the structure and movement of the sacrum and low back, and will specifically emphasize how to assess problems with the psoas and ‘core’ — and how to release, activate, strengthen, and best support the work of this gatekeeper of the ‘midline’ in asana practice, as well as ‘off the mat.’

This will be an extraordinarily informative and hands-on session in which assessment of sacral problems as well as languaging of instructions for guiding students (or yourself ) through safe and beneficial practice of asanas will be the major emphasis.

Our activities will include practice of asanas (exploring alignment and action for the sacrum) as well as an in-depth look at assessment techniques for sacral health and the role of marma points in the process of healing (with hands-on experience).

Doug, ERYT 500, is registered with the International Association of Yoga Therapists and is author of numerous books and CDs covering all aspects of the practice of yoga. He is well known for his Yoga As Therapy manual, an extensive look at applying the structural alignment principles, asanas, exercises and the energetics of yoga to healing the physical body.

He has a strong background in the alignment based styles of Iyengar and Anusara Yoga®, as well as in yoga philosophy and yoga therapy. He is a regular columnist in the internationally renowned magazine Yoga+ and is the author of several books covering all aspects of yoga practice. He holds a Master’s Degree in Philosophy from Fordham University, and travels nationally and internationally, teaching workshops in philosophy and pranayama as well as hatha yoga.

Ayurvedic Philosophy, Diet & Lifestyle
Dates: TBA
$250

Ayurveda is the knowledge that indicates which activities and eating habits are appropriate and inappropriate, auspicious and inauspicious, what brings happiness and sorrow, as well as what increases the measure of life itself

- Charaka Samhita 1.41

Ayurveda, the “knowledge of longevity”, is the oldest and the most comprehensive systems of healing in the world and it has its roots in the philosophy of the ancient Vedas. It is an integral part of yogic psychology, philosophy and practice. Ayurveda relies on the six systems of Indian Philosophy, the Shad Darshan, for its founding principles, particularly Sankhya philosophy of creation and evolution.

Darshan is more than philosophy. It is a system of knowing based on perception and inner vision. The enlightened rishis of the Vedic age were able to discover the truth of life through the purity of their hearts and their exalted sense of awareness.

The goal of Ayurveda is to restore balance to the body, mind and soul. Disease is seen as the abnormal expression of the vitiated dosha and to restore health, the increased dosha must be pacified and returned to its site of accumulation. At the same time the destruction of the tissues and organs, caused by the imbalanced doshas, must be addressed and suitable therapies must be used to restore their function. In Ayurveda prevention is emphasized. It is easier to treat the disease at its accumulation stage than at the later stages of complication and destruction. The reasons are obvious.

In this 16-hour introductory course, the theory of ayurveda will be presented. We will cover Sankhya philosophy of creation, the 24-Cosmic principles (gunas, buddhi, manas, ahamkara, indriyas, the tattvas and tanmatras), the doshas and sub-doshas, Agni and digestion, Ama, and an introduction to the science of the six tastes.

Brendan Feeley is an internationally recognized author, speaker, teacher and consultant in Ayurveda and Jyotish (Vedic Astrology). He has an M.A. degree in Jung’s depth psychology and doctorate degrees in naturopathy and homeopathy. His practice is based in Rockville, MD.

He is also a faculty member of the American Council of Vedic Astrologers (ACVA),and a member of the National Ayurvedic Medical Association.
