A blog by kim weeks about yoga in everyday life

a boundless student testimonial

For many years, I had a very fickle relationship with yoga. It was love at first asana, to be sure, but depending on what else was going on in my life, my focus and dedication waffled and I could go months without stepping on my mat. When I moved to DC in 2005, I tested a bunch of gyms, then yoga studios, and because of a random spring promotion I committed two months to Boundless.

I knew immediately that there was something different about this place.  Maybe it was the sense of community among strangers or the
way teachers tried to get to know their students, I am not totally sure. Regardless of the ‘it’ factor, I found myself coming into the studio
taking as many classes as I could, trying out as many teachers as possible to figure out which ones fit my style, and fashioning my weekly schedule around the classes I wanted to take.

After a year and a half at Boundless, I am dedicated to my yoga practice and know I will take it with me wherever I go.  Through some fabulous teachers, I have grown immensely and am able to learn something new every time I come to my mat.  At Boundless, you can explore your own possibilities in a creative, supportive, fun environment where people know how to laugh even when they are being serious.    –sd

a boundless testimonial

boundless is an oasis of peace and learning in our work-obsessed city. i practised yoga with kim before she opened boundless, and i have been attending classes from day one. every time i leave class i feel more energetic, more peaceful, and more centered. the good news is that others notice it, too. everyone should come to boundless to share in its unique approach to practising yoga.

a boundless testimonial

I am what you might call an A-type personality: always on the go, ambitious, organized. Thus I always thought of yoga as something that was totally contrary to my lifestyle; I’d rather spend my time running. But I wandered into Boundless Yoga on a whim after passing by a few times and it has offered me a fresh perspective on my life. I have gained flexibility and strength and have been able to push my body to places that I never thought possible. I have more awareness of my physical and mental states both inside and out of the yoga studio. I can identify my thoughts, feelings, and physical issues with more accuracy and clarity.

The hour and a half that I am in the studio is my own time, free from outside distractions. The asanas force me to concentrate on the present rather than on whatever might be happening next. And when I leave, I retain the ability to calm myself down when I feel stressed or upset.

In short, Boundless has changed the way I wake up each morning and face the day. The best part about Boundless, though, is that it is a community in which both teachers and students struggle and achieve together.

another boundless testimonial

and we’re happy to post this testimonial after the Washington Post Express article yesterday on “Downward Dudes!” i recommend reading this thoughtful, interesting account of men doing yoga (mostly at our studio!). Following are some thoughts from a male boundless student.

“I’ve tried a variety of yoga studios, in several cities and several countries, during my ongoing struggle to develop a better relationship with my somewhat inflexible, desk-bound, middle-aged male body. Boundless Yoga has been easily the best of these. What I particularly appreciate is the mindfulness BY’s instructors model for us; the adjustments that they have helped me perform — with none of the dismissive “but you’re doing it wrong!!” attitude that I have encountered elsewhere — have done not just my body but also my mind a world of good. Indeed, ‘a world of good’ would be a nice way of describing everything that BY represents.”

a student’s view of boundless yoga

this is a review we received not long ago from a student at boundless. as much as my words describing the types of classes may help, the following is a firsthand experience that provides another perspective!

“I have been a yogi for about ten years now, on the east and west coasts, and Boundless is unlike any other studio I’ve been to. There is a real sense of community to the place. It feels less commercially-driven and less body-focused than most yoga studios, but the teachers are all top-notch, with amazing knowledge of the body, and an open-hearted curiosity about the role of mind and spirit as they shape our yoga practice. What I may love most about Boundless, in fact, is the way Kim and the other instructors help their students see yoga as a kind of research, as a path to knowledge about the self and the world. In a way, I think of Boundless as a kind of research center, bringing together seeking souls in a Compassion Project to work on the question, what would a yogic world look like? And it’s right in the middle of busy U Street! It’s my favorite place in Washington.”
