beat the winter blues: rejuvenate with kristen krash, sunday, 1230-230 p, $40

on 3:19 pm December 14th, 2006 / Be the first to comment! »

january 21, 12:30 -2:30 p, $40

beat the winter blues, energize, and rejuvenate with boundless teacher kristen krash! as winter lumbers on in january with short cold days and long colder nights, we often find ourselves feeling de-energized, de-motivated, and even depressed. what used to be referred to as a case of the winter blues now even has its own medical diagnosis–seasonal affective disorder, and how SAD it is. in ayurvedic terms, winter depression results from an imbalance of kapha energy, and thankfully, there are natural remedies available to us!

this workshop will begin with a brief discussion of a “seasonal” approach to asana practice and then launch into an invigorating asana and breath-work practice, designed to build energy and heat and kick out those winter doldrums. the practice will include sun salutes and standing poses to warm the body and move energy, lots of chest and shoulder openers to reverse the effects of tensing up in the cold weather, some fun inversions to increase circulation, and twists to stimulate and tone the internal organs. students will also receive a handout of asanas (postures) to do at home when that winter lethargy sets in, as well as some tips on kapha-reducing herbs, spices, and aromatherapy.

this is part one of the workshop, taught at a beginning level; part two for intermediate practitioners will be jan 28.

friday, december 22, 4:15 – 5:30 pm
join tori and fellow boundless yogis and yoginis for a series of sun salutations
to celebrate the solstice on december 22.

when?
friday, december 22, 4:15-5:30pm. come at the beginning or drop in any time; stay as long as you like. at 4:50PM, we will pause for a few moments of meditation.

where?
1522 U Street NW

how much?
free; suggested donation to local charity

what?
a mindful practice is the only requirement for this celebration; you need not complete a particular number of sun salutations! either a full complement of 108 surya namaskar A, or as many sets of 9 as you want to perform, will be great.

the session will be hosted by Tori, but will not be a “class.” you will practice individually, in your own time and according to your own inclinations. at 4:50PM, when the sun sets on this shortest day of the year, we will pause for a few moments of meditation together.

learning to breath appropriately is the fundamental practice underlying the science of yoga. as we deepen our asana (pose), the examination of the breath becomes more important.

this seven week series will teach you to look at breathing with the same way you consider watering a plant: slowly, delicately and deeply in order to reach all the roots. specifically you will learn: a) the difference between the belly and the chest, b) how to even out the inhale and exhale, c) how to extend the exhale which maximizes relaxation, health and longevity.
