Liana Brooks-Rubin has been practicing yoga for a decade and teaching for close to five years. Liana has been a regular at Boundless Yoga from its inception and completed her basic (RYT-200) and advanced (RYT-500) program here. Throughout most of the past decade, Liana’s full-time job was as a diplomat and humanitarian, administering refugee assistance programs for the U.S. State Department throughout the Middle East and South Asia. In late 2009, Liana left this job and is now doing her best to practice, teach, love, and live in line with her understanding of the teachings of yoga. But, to paraphrase an old saying: “you can take the girl out of the job, but you can’t take the job out of the girl.” Recently and quite unexpectedly, Liana has found herself making linkages between refugee-hood (physical exile from one’s homeland) and the exile many of us experience from our bodies, breath, and spirit. Liana has come to believe that there is no better way to rediscover the path home to our bodies, breath, and ultimately our true selves than a dedicated yoga practice. Liana’s asana classes are tailored for students who wish to learn or further ground their practice in basic principles of alignment, while challenging themselves to experiment with more advanced poses. Liana aims to provide a comfortable space for beginners to get their “yoga bearings,” while focusing on the subtle aspects of the practice with intermediate and advanced students. She has a profound appreciation for the ancient (yet timeless) tenets of yoga philosophy and aims to integrate these principles into her classes as often as possible. Liana is deeply grateful to all of her teachers for making space for her questions, pushing her when needed, and instilling in her a strong appreciation for the connection between physical alignment and emotional well-being. She is equally grateful to her husband and two beautiful sons for keeping her sense of humor intact.
