  1. Sorry, Kelly, I don’t really like music when I practice; the most I can handle is nature sounds or the dreamy, sitar-y tapes Leah sometimes uses in her classes, which feel right for an 8pm class. Anything else I find very distracting, taking me out of my head and into another place.

I once took a class (not at Boundless) where the teacher used exactly the same tapes my esthetician uses and I couldn’t stop thinking about getting my brows waxed!

  2. lol I love it Jeanette! that is totally true, and hilarious about your brow waxing music. There is definitely (dis)association that is more possible with music in the room.

I agree about the possible distraction of music in a practice. Some days, I love music with my yoga. Some days, I need the silence. It’s all about rhythm and my body for me

We’re looking into painting pretty lyrics on the wall somewhere at the new space as an interior decorating idea.

Do you like that idea? If so, what lyrics do you love?

  3. Maybe you can have a “Music Yoga” class. It was be soo much fun. One class have girl power music (Suddenly I See/I’m Every Woman), celebration music (Thank you(Dido)/Kind & Generous (Natalie Merchant)). I could go on and on, but you get the point. Some “fun” yoga classes that get people moving and a little singing.

    Smooches…

  4. I like Theresa’s idea. I’ve been in some classes in which the music really drowned out the teacher because it was too freaking loud, and the teacher had to yell, which was *supremely* annoying. Like, dude, turn it DOWN. Then there was one class in which the CD or iPod kept playing the same song overandoverandover. It was at Christmastime. It was cute once or twice. Not 12 times. Nobody said anything and the teacher didn’t do anything. La-ti-da.

Music is really powerful and can set a mood, but it can get in the way in a detail-intensive or Iyengar-style class. When I’m on my own, I practice to mostly slow-ish and moody stuff. It depends. Anything that isn’t distracting. When I run on the treadmill, it’s shredding rock guitar stuff. But I can remember some of the pieces that one of my earliest yoga teachers used, and they really stayed with me. Mostly classical, nonverbal ones. The Aquarium bit from Saint-Saens’ “Carnival of the Animals” and the popular Flower Duet from “Lakme,” for instance. And in the past year, Ziggy Marley’s “Love Is My Religion” really struck a chord. So to speak.

  5. Teresa, I love your music choices! Yes – exactly. Let’s do it!

Leslie, rock on. Not cute 12 times. I hear that.

    Heart Ziggy Marley -

  6. You want lyrics?? Wouldn’t it be great to paint the entire “I Got Life” lyrics from “Hair” on the walls? It’s what I listen to when I’m on my trampoline, and need energy:

    I got life, mother
    I got laughs, sister
    I got freedom, brother
    I got good times, man

    I got crazy ways, daughter
    I got million-dollar charm, cousin
    I got headaches and toothaches
    And bad times too
    Like you

    I got my hair
    I got my head
    I got my brains
    I got my ears
    I got my eyes
    I got my nose
    I got my mouth
    I got my teeth
    I got my tongue
    I got my chin
    I got my neck
    I got my tits
    I got my heart
    I got my soul
    I got my back
    I got my ass
    I got my arms
    I got my hands
    I got my fingers
    Got my legs
    I got my feet
    I got my toes
    I got my liver
    Got my blood
    I got my guts
    I got my muscle
    I got LIFE
